Not-spots
May 11
Not-spots are ‘an area where you can’t get broadband services (at all, or at a reasonable cost)’
Slow spots are places where there is access to the internet but it is slow and therefore tricky to use in a way that many now wish to use the internet (to watch videos, to make online purchases, to chat etc). The Broadband Not-Spot project define a slow spot as ‘ an area where you can only get a broadband service with a speed of below 2 Mbps (downstream)’
Some of South Yorkshire’s slow and not spots are recorded here on their website run by Think Broadband.
If you’re aware of any more add them on, their site explains how to test your broadband if you’re not sure what it is. There seems to only be only 1 not spot in South Yorkshire and that’s in Sheffield which strikes me as not being correct, however if you can’t get access to broadband or it’s painfully slow perhaps visiting this site would be your top priority… I can’t see any phone numbers to call and report slow/ not spots (but that’s not so unreasonable given it’s a community project and there may be no central co-ordination/ resource to field phone calls).
If you don’t have access at home you’ll probably need to go to a library or a friends house or ask a friend to fill in the not spot reporting form for you. Also, if you’re working in homes or venues where it’s an issue I’d encourage you to record the information here as it could produce a useful place to start from when addressing ssues or planning services.
